Italian physician and missionary who devoted his life to serving the sick and poor, particularly in Brazil, where he provided free medical care to leprosy patients and lived out his deep Catholic faith through compassionate service.
[To his wife, Luisa] My dear love, my woman, my little sweet flower. I must thank the Lord for the gift he has given me in you. It is for a new love that he put it in our hearts. I understood that the more I remain tied to the Lord, the more I remain tied to you, and the more I love you.
Alessandro Nottegar (1943–1986) was an Italian physician and devout Catholic who dedicated his life to serving the poor and sick, particularly in Brazil. Born in Verona as the ninth of ten children, he initially pursued religious studies but later felt called to family life. After marrying Luisa Scipionato in 1971, he earned a medical degree and, in 1978, moved with his family to Brazil to provide free medical care to impoverished communities, including those afflicted with leprosy. His work was deeply rooted in his faith, viewing each patient as a reflection of Christ.
In 1982, due to his daughter Chiara's illness, Nottegar returned to Italy and worked at San Bonifacio Hospital. Inspired to continue his mission, he and his wife founded the Comunità Regina Pacis on August 15, 1986, aiming to live the Gospel through prayer and service to the needy. Tragically, just over a month later, he died of a heart attack at the age of 42.
Recognized for his virtuous life, the Catholic Church initiated his beatification process in 2007, and in 2017, Pope Francis declared him Venerable.
