Servant of God Charlene Marie Richard was born on January 13, 1947, in Richard, Louisiana, as the second of ten children to Joseph Elvin and Mary Alice Richard. Growing up in a devout Cajun Catholic family, she was known for her vibrant spirit, love for sports, and deep faith. In May 1959, inspired by reading about St. Thérèse of Lisieux, Charlene expressed a desire to emulate the saint's path to holiness through prayer and sacrifice.
In July 1959, at the age of 12, Charlene was diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia and hospitalized at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana. Informed of her terminal condition by hospital chaplain Father Joseph Brennan, she embraced her suffering with remarkable faith, offering her pain for the conversion and healing of others. Medical staff, including Sister Theresita Crowley, witnessed her serene acceptance and the profound impact of her prayers on those around her.
Charlene passed away on August 11, 1959, and was laid to rest in her hometown. Over the decades, numerous visitors have reported favors and healings attributed to her intercession, leading to a growing devotion. In January 2020, the Diocese of Lafayette officially opened her cause for canonization, bestowing upon her the title Servant of God.
