Giuseppina Suriano

Giuseppina Suriano was born on February 18, 1915, in Partinico, Sicily, into a devout Catholic family. From an early age, she showed deep faith and a quiet, joyful piety that impressed her teachers and parish community. Immersed in parish life, she joined Catholic Action at the age of seven, where she began a lifelong commitment to serving the Church and promoting the spiritual growth of others.

As a young woman, Pina dedicated herself wholeheartedly to Catholic Action, serving as local secretary from 1939 to 1948 and president of the youth branch from 1945 to 1948. She also founded the Association of the Daughters of Mary in 1948 and led it until her death. Although she deeply desired to enter religious life, her family’s opposition and fragile health prevented it. She briefly entered the Daughters of Saint Anne in Palermo in 1940 but was forced to leave after only a few days due to a heart condition.

In 1948, Pina and three companions offered their lives spiritually for the sanctification of priests, deepening her life of prayer and sacrifice. Despite suffering from severe rheumatic arthritis in her final years, she remained devoted to God and her parish. On May 19, 1950, while preparing to attend Mass, she died suddenly of a heart attack at the age of 35. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 5, 2004.
